Adsorbent materials facilitate conversion of a liquid to a semisolid phase and are used after the skimming operation to clean the remaining oil. These adsorbents can be natural organic, natural inorganic, or synthetic materials. Natural organic sorbents include peat, hay, vegetable fibers, feathers, kapok, sawdust, milkweed, straw, etc. These readily available and less expensive materials have been used by researchers to achieve maximum absorption.
