It is utilized for base catalyzed isomerization and alkylation hydrocyanation due to its low permittivity. It reacts with oxalyl chloride to prepare tetramethyl chloroformamidinium chloride, which is used for the conversion of carboxylic acids and dialkyl phosphates to anhydrides and pyrophosphates respectively.
