Nile Red has been shown to detect the exposure or formation of new hydrophobic surfaces induced by ligand binding to calmodulin, oligomerization of melittin, or unfolding of ovalbumin during early thermal denaturation.

N 1627 (OTTO) Nile red, puriss Cas 7385-67-3 - used for staining SDS (sodium dodecyl sulphate) gels. N 1627 (OTTO) Nile red, puriss Cas 7385-67-3 - used as a membrane dye which can be readily visualized using an epifluorescence microscope with excitation and emission wavelengths usually shared with red fluorescent protein.
